Convincing a woman that you're the right person for her to commit to for the long-term is incredibly difficult. While guys are famous for being "commitment-phobic," women are famous for overthinking things. If you thought love was as easy as some nice presents and expensive dates, you were wrong. Women have long memories for their partners' screw-ups, and if you've made a fatal relationship error along the way, rest assured that she still thinks about it. More often than not, she has given you subtle hints of her concerns. Some women are blunt and tell their men abruptly that they hate their guts and no longer want them. But most women are clever and will only offer hints that their love is long, long gone.

The dreaded awkward card

This example will demonstrate my theory. Recently, I went to a male friend's birthday party. His girlfriend gave him a gift and a card on which she wrote, "You've played a key role in my life."

Over the years I'd read other letters she had written and they all said variations on the theme of, "You're the best thing that ever happened to me."
